Introduction

The Journal of Islamic Thought and Philosophy (JITP) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity and originality in scholarly publishing. The journal strictly prohibits plagiarism in any form and promotes responsible research and ethical writing practices.

This policy outlines the journal’s definition of plagiarism, the procedures used to detect textual similarity, and the actions taken when plagiarism is identified. By submitting a manuscript to JITP, authors confirm that their work is original and that all sources and contributions of others have been appropriately acknowledged.

JITP follows internationally recognized publication ethics standards, including the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism refers to the use of another individual’s ideas, words, data, or creative work without proper acknowledgment. Such practices undermine the integrity of academic scholarship and are considered a serious violation of publication ethics.

Plagiarism may include, but is not limited to:

  • Direct copying of text, phrases, or substantial sections of another work without quotation marks and appropriate citation.

  • Improper paraphrasing, where another author’s work is closely reworded without sufficient acknowledgment.

  • Unauthorized reproduction of figures, tables, datasets, or research findings without attribution or permission.

  • Misrepresentation of ideas, where existing concepts, interpretations, or theories are presented as original contributions.

  • Self-plagiarism, involving the reuse of significant portions of an author’s previously published work without proper citation or justification.

All authors are expected to properly acknowledge the intellectual contributions of others in accordance with established academic conventions.

Policy Guidelines

Plagiarism Screening

All manuscripts submitted to JITP undergo plagiarism screening before entering the peer review process.

Detection Tool

The journal uses Turnitin to evaluate textual similarity and identify potential overlaps with previously published works.

Similarity Threshold

Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 20% may undergo additional editorial assessment. However, similarity scores are interpreted carefully and contextually by the editorial team.

Exclusions from Similarity Analysis

To ensure fair evaluation, the plagiarism detection system excludes:

  • bibliographies and reference lists

  • properly quoted material enclosed in quotation marks

  • accurately cited text segments

Consequences of Plagiarism

Before Publication

If plagiarism is detected during the review process:

  • the manuscript will be rejected

  • the corresponding author will be notified

  • in serious cases, the authors’ affiliated institutions may be informed

After Publication

If plagiarism is identified after an article has been published, the journal will conduct a formal investigation. If the allegation is confirmed:

  • the article may be formally retracted

  • a retraction notice will be published

  • the authors’ affiliated institutions may be notified

Additional actions may be taken depending on the severity of the misconduct.

Implementation Procedures

Initial Screening

Upon submission, all manuscripts are screened using Turnitin to generate a similarity report.

Editorial Evaluation

The editorial team carefully reviews similarity reports. A high similarity score does not automatically constitute plagiarism; editors assess whether the flagged content reflects legitimate scholarly conventions such as commonly used methodological descriptions or correctly cited references.

Author Responsibility

Authors bear full responsibility for the originality of their manuscripts. All sources must be properly cited, and permission must be obtained for any copyrighted material included in the manuscript.

Handling Allegations

In cases of suspected plagiarism, JITP follows established ethical procedures to investigate the matter. Authors will be given the opportunity to respond to allegations before any final decision is made.

Transparency and Communication

JITP is committed to transparency in addressing plagiarism concerns. Authors may contact the editorial office for clarification regarding plagiarism screening or editorial decisions.

Policy Review

To remain aligned with evolving standards in scholarly publishing, this policy is periodically reviewed and updated.
