About the Journal
Religio: Jurnal Studi Agama-Agama is a peer-reviewed international journal published by the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Philosophy, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, Indonesia. Since its inaugural publication in 2011, Religio has consistently contributed to the advancement of religious studies scholarship in both national and international academic spheres.
The journal provides a platform for scholarly dialogue in religious studies by promoting and disseminating research on textual, historical, and empirical issues. It primarily focuses on the Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts, with special attention to the anthropology and sociology of religion. However, it also welcomes contributions that adopt multidisciplinary perspectives on the history of religion and indigenous religious practices.
The rationale behind the establishment of Religio is to respond to the urgent academic need for contextualized studies of religion that reflect the complex socio-cultural realities of the Global South, particularly within Muslim-majority societies. As such, the journal positions itself at the intersection of local knowledge production and global theoretical frameworks. It seeks to foster critical and comparative scholarship that not only advances empirical understanding but also contributes to theoretical innovation in the study of religion.
By cultivating a strong research identity rooted in regional expertise yet open to global discourses, Religio aspires to be a leading journal that bridges scholarly traditions across contexts. It is committed to curating high-caliber academic work that addresses contemporary issues in religious thought and practice, thereby serving as a vital resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in religious and interreligious studies.
We invite scholars and researchers from diverse geographical and disciplinary backgrounds to submit their articles to Religio, especially those exploring themes such as religious pluralism, lived religion, interfaith dialogue, and religion in the public sphere.
